To achieve a good jazz tone, drum tuning is crucial. The high-tension skins on the Jazz Standard kit were carefully tuned for optimal resonance and treated gently to fit nicely into a mix.

 

The kick drum on this drumset features full natural-style skins with minimal damping and is played with the beater off. The cymbals are also meticulously sampled to provide a smokey vintage vibe reminiscent of cymbals from the ’50s. The ride cymbal offers a beautiful harmonic wash that breathes life and air into your music.

 

The result is a dynamic jazz drumset with finesse and nuance ideal for jazz styles or any genre requiring subtlety.

Every drum stroke played by a real drummer is ever so slightly different from the previous one, no matter how good the drummer is. This is part of what gives it that “human” feel and is why our ears can instantly hear the difference between a roll played by a real drummer and the same sample being triggered over again.

 

To make our Jazz Standard sound more like a real jazz drummer, each drum and cymbal has been sampled numerous times at every dynamic level. No sample is repeated sequentially during playback, but a different one is triggered.

 

This culminates in the impression of a drummer hitting each drum with minor variations each time. Something many other ‘realistic’ VIs never quite nail.

Our Jazz Drums were captured using the highest-quality microphones, preamps, and converters to preserve every minute detail.

Jazz Standard conforms to GM drum mapping wherever possible. Drop in any standard midi drum loop onto your DAW timeline to hear immediate results. It’s equally easy to match the mapping of Handy Drums to any custom midi drum loop.

Use your favourite reverb, equaliser, tape simulator, or any other FX plugin to further manipulate Handy Drums’ individual components. Each drum component can be output to any of the available eight stereo subgroups allowing independent processing.

Variable Hi Hats- What Are They And How To Utilize Them Within Handy Drums?

An acoustic hi-hat is a complex instrument in its own right. One of the most awesome features of Handy Drums is the variable hi-hats. It utilises full range of sampled hats from tightly closed to closed, 25% open, 50% open, 75% open, and 100% open, for both tip and edge sounds. 

 

Despite these 12 types of articulations, 10 dynamic ranges, and numerous round robins, you can seamlessly switch from one to another using only TWO notes and a CC4 controller.

 

This approach streamlines something that was previously more of a time sink of assigning notes to each articulation.

The hi‑hat mapping is nicely done, providing plenty of control over the degree of closed/open status of the cymbals.

Handy Drums are a great companion to electronic drum kits. You can even adjust your hi-hat foot controller curve. The curve is particularly beneficial for drum modules that do not output the full value range from 1-127.

Sometimes the only way to rescue an otherwise great drum performance but perhaps not ideally sounding is to use “drum replacement”. This way you can quickly preserve the original feel but load a great sounding kit to taste in no time.

 

Our sampled drum instrument is a great drum replacement contender. If your DAW can extract transients from an audio recording, it’s a simple task to create a MIDI track from it and rout it to Handy Drums instrument. Instant depth and presence!
