Mathematical perfection is rarely desired in music, and that is most significantly the case in Latin music, where the rhythms fall between straight and swing feel. Slight deviations from the rigid grid make a drum groove “swing” or feel natural.

 

These grooves were first played-in on an electronic drumset, then edited by a world-class drummer, Ludwig Afonso. The results are natural-sounding grooves with an authentic human feel and dynamics.

What matters are the end results: authentic-sounding Latin grooves.

 

Merely recording even a world-class Latin drummer on an e-drumset doesn’t necessarily guarantee the resulting MIDI drum patterns will translate to an acoustic-like performance.

 

Ludwig Afonso carefully auditioned and edited, where necessary, each note so that what you hear sounds as close as possible to what he sounds on an acoustic drumset. We ensure that the feel is consistent throughout and that the grooves loop seamlessly.

Micro-Dynamics

 

Great human drummers play drums dynamically. In addition to playing entire song sections softer or louder, every bar contains micro-dynamics.

 

Oftentimes, the biggest giveaway and vibe-killer are programmed drum tracks at the very top of the velocity range. Micro-dynamics are the differences between accented and unaccented notes. Without them, a perfectly natural drum groove sounds robotic and fake.

MEET THE DRUMMER PRODUCER- LUDWIG AFONSO

A Cuban native, Ludwig Afonso has been one of the hottest drummers on the Jazz scene since moving to New York from Miami in 2003 and landing a gig with Spyro Gyra.

 

He has been the backbone for Richard Bona’s band for the nearly two decades and has been regularly performing with the likes of Eldar Djangirov, Martin Bejerano, Yosvanny Terry, Giovanni Hidalgo, Joshua Redman, John Benitez, Dave Valentin, Pedrito Martinez, The Rodriguez Brothers, Manuel Valera, Mark Murphy, Juan Carlos Formel among many others.

 

As groove and rhythms naturally flow through his veins, Ludwig is infusing his vast performing experience and knowledge into drum loop production to benefit musicians and producers worldwide.
