Inspired by the iconic drum sound from Don Henley’s Hotel California, VINTAGE STANDARD delivers the warmth, presence, and character of the classic drum sounds of the past.

 

To achieve this sound, we used some of the finest modern equipment to capture the drumset’s unique sound while also treating the kit in the same way they did back in the ’70s. This included giving masking tape and napkins a run for their money to achieve the desired vintage sound.

 

After a careful mixdown of the multitrack recording to stereo, the Vintage Standard drumset was run through an analog tape reel to acquire that elusive saturation and classic drum sound.

 

The end result is a drumset with a dry ambient sound and short decay that projects punch, warmth, and controlled tom sound. The cymbals are also designed to have a dark, vintage sound that complements the rest of the kit.

Since you are looking for a vintage drum sound, you are likely after some of that tape “magic” as well. No need to pull in tape simulation plugins with these drum samples.

 

After multitrack were mixed down to a stereo track, they were transferred over to a 1/4″ analog tape reel on a Studer tape machine and then back into DAW for some chop-chop action. The resulting drum samples contain subtle tape saturation and compression, while still maintaining the full dynamic range of the kit.

When a drummer strikes a drum, each subsequential stroke is ever so slightly different from the one preceding, no matter how consistently they are played. That’s why we can instantly tell the difference between a roll played by a real drummer and a single sample being looped.

 

We sampled each drum and cymbal numerous times at every dynamic level. During a playback, no sample is repeated sequentially, but a different sample is triggered.

 

This culminates in the impression of a drummer hitting each drum with minor variations each time. Something many other ‘realistic’ VIs never quite nail.

To achieve a larger-than-life yet completely natural vintage drum sound, every step of the sampling process is critical. Starting with the drum tuning and muffling, drums were carefully treated before we played even a single note. 

 

We captured them using the highest-quality mics, preamps, and converters to preserve every minute detail.

We achieved realism by recording the full breadth of acoustic drums and their natural ambiance, with meticulous editing and blending in the post-production.

An acoustic hi-hat is a complex instrument in its own right. Handy Drums VINTAGE STANDARD variable hi-hats utilize the full range of sampled hats from tightly closed to closed, 25% open, 50% open, 75% open, and 100% open, for both tip and edge sounds. 

 

Despite these 12 types of articulations, multiple dynamic ranges, and round robins, you can seamlessly switch from one to another using only TWO notes and a CC4 controller.

 

This approach streamlines something that was previously more of a time sink of assigning notes to each articulation.

An easy way to uplift a chorus is to layer the percussive sounds of handclaps or boost forward motion by adding a tambourine.
