How To Update Handy Drums

Overview #

If you have already installed the previous version of Handy Drums, you can run the “update only” installer and not the full installer due to its smaller download file size.

The exceptions are the Vintage Ludwig and Ballad Rock plugins: see this important info.

You should run the full installers if you have not previously installed the complete packages. See here for more info.

Depending on what version you have installed on your system, you may need to run more than one update installer.

If updating from v1.4.0– Install “update only” v1.4.1.

If updating from v1.0.3– Install “update only” v1.4.0, then “update only” v1.4.1, or run the “full installer” v1.4.1.

If you are unsure what version of Handy Drums you have, open a Handy Drums standalone app or plugin in your DAW, and you will see the version displayed on the main GUI under the product title.

IMPORTANT (updating from v1.0.3):

After updating the Handy Drums plugins from v1.0.3, you may not get any signal output when you open an existing DAW session created using a previous version of Handy Drums plugins. That is because we introduced the DRUMS subgroup, which now defaults to 0.

To fix it, do one of the following.

  1. Open the subgroups tab and move the DRUMS subgroup fader to the top, or
  2. Open the Preset Manager by clicking on the button at the bottom of the plugin, then select the default preset for the plugin.

Download Handy Drums plugin updates #

To update, go to your GoranGrooves Library account, and in the downloads popup, navigate to your platform (Win/Mac) and choose the “update only” installer to download.

The “update installers” contain updated plugin versions in VST2, VST3, AU, and Standalone apps.

V1.4.0 also introduces the AAX plugin format for Pro Tools; default plugin presets, MIDI demos, and additional samples to be added to your existing sample library.

V1.4.1 includes only updates to the software plugins and standalone apps.

Once fully downloaded, run the installer(s) as you did when you originally installed the plugins.

Updating on Windows: #

V1.4.1:

Run the “update only” installer and let it overwrite your existing plugin and standalone app installations.

V1.4.0:

During the installation, you will be prompted to point to the location where you previously installed the samples for the plugin so that you can install the additional new samples. If you previously installed the samples in the default location, you should leave the default location in the “update installer.”

However, if you previously specified the location, you must locate the folder containing the sample library for the plugin.

For example, if you previously installed Flamenco Percussion into a “My Samples” directory on D drive, the installer would have created the final path, which would look like this:

C:\My Samples\GoranGrooves Samples\Handy Drums\Flamenco Percussion\

During the updating, you would then need to navigate to the Flamenco Percussion folder, which contains the sample library.

Updating on Mac: #

V1.4.1:

Run the installer and let it update your currently-installer plugins and a standalone app.

V1.4.0:

Mac installers do not offer an option to customize the installation location of the sample libraries. Therefore, the updating would go smoothly if you didn’t manually relocate the sample library location after the installation.

If you previously relocated the sample library after installation, then you will need to manually move the new additional samples to your existing sample library for each Handy Drums plugin.

You will find the new samples installed in the following location:

Mac HD\Library\GoranGrooves Samples\Handy Drums\Name Of The Plugin

The “update installer” will not change the link file that points the plugin to the sample library, so your previous settings will remain intact.

Updating Vintage Ludwig and Ballad Rock plugins #

For v1.4.0, we renamed Vintage Ludwig to Vintage Standard and Ballad Rock to Power Rock. Therefore, to avoid potential conflicts with sample library locations, only full installers containing the sample libraries are available. While the included samples remain the same, their containing folders have changed to reflect the plugins’ name changes.

After installing the new version of the plugins (along with the sample libraries), we recommend you manually remove the previous installation of sample libraries for those instruments, as they are now duplicates.

Default sample installation directories are as follows.

Win

C:\Program Files\GoranGrooves Samples\Handy Drums\Vintage Ludwig\

C:\Program Files\GoranGrooves Samples\Handy Drums\Ballad Rock\

Windows have uninstallers that will remove all traces of the plugins and their sample libraries.

Mac

Mac HD\Library\GoranGrooves Samples\Handy Drums\Vintage Ludwig

Mac HD\Library\GoranGrooves Samples\Handy Drums\Ballad Rock\

You can keep the previous versions of the plugins installed and point them to the new sample library installation folders. Once you update your existing DAW sessions to use the newly named plugins, you may remove the previous version of the plugins.
