V2.1 #
Published May 8, 2020
- Updated “Brushes” drumset with new snare drum samples and new snare articulations.
- The brushes drumset version increased to v3.
- Edited all MIDI loops in Brushes songs to play correctly on the new version of the Brushes drumset. All velocities were set to about half of what they were. The grooves now sound gentler and more appropriate for the brush playing style.
Changes to the Brushes drumset #
While the new version of the Brushes drumset has the same sound character as the previous version, most samples were replaced with new samples. We did this to achieve a greater dynamic range and to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The results are “cleaner” sounding samples that produce an overall cleaner output when beats are played at a lower dynamic level with the master output turned up. As well as most of the components, the snare drum was re-sampled to provide finer details for lower volume playing.
New instrument articulations have been added:
- Snare short sweep (E1, note id# 40)
- Snare long sweep (F1, note id# 41)
- Snare long sweep off-switch (B0, note id# 35)
- Hi-hat foot splash (B1, note id# 47)
Snare long sweeps act similar to an open hi-hat note. They sound in their entirety or until they are cut off by the switch note on B0.

This is a major change that affects all aspects of the original edition. Over 2000 MIDI loops were analyzed and edited. Samples of some drumsets were remixed, or EQ’d, and drumset components were re-balanced.
Overview of changes: #
- Microdynamics: For example, hi-hats have a better ratio of accented and non-accented notes, and the snare has finer ghost notes.
- Groove: Small tweaks were made to make beats tighter and groovier and to loop smoothly. The human feel is still present.
- Simplification of varying beats: A beat with too many variations was sometimes simplified and shortened to a 2-bar phrase or a 4-bar phrase.
- Fill simplification: Many drum fills were replaced with very simple fills, while others were edited, simplified, and quantized to better fit with beats.
- Drum mapping change of Latin drumset
- Remixed: Jazz and Latin drumsets.
- New Standard drumset- contains all new samples, a different-sounding snare drum, and short-decay toms.
- Drumsets mix and levels- all drumsets had individual components adjusted and overall volumes adjusted uniformly.
- All Premium drumsets have also been tweaked.
- While beat, fill, and song names were kept, each changed beat and fill file was marked with either an “!” or a “+” at the end of the name.
The most significant changes: #
- Jazz Genre: The Jazz genre was re-recorded and edited from scratch. It has no resemblance to the original one. Previous songs were discarded. All beats are tight to the click and contain a human feel appropriate for the particular tempo they were made for.
- Jazz Drumset: The jazz drumset features a newly sampled snare drum with a tighter and nicer-sounding tone. Toms 2 and 3 and the kick were remixed and re-edited to sound warmer and cleaner. The new Jazz grooves sound authentic and realistic when played on the updated Jazz kit.
- Latin Drumset: a significant overhaul of the drum mapping for percussion components. The new mapping is significantly simpler. Congas and low timbale were EQ’d to reduce overtone ringing. A new instrument was added- the guira.
Here is the current drum map for Latin Percussion. - Latin Genre: all beats were edited to conform to the new drum mapping. Authentic Latin human feel was applied to all beats. Microdynamics were improved.
- Standard Drumset: New snare drum samples result in a tighter sound. New toms were mixed and edited, resulting in a punchier sound that gets out of the way quicker and has less ambiance.
